Crumpled in the middle of a snow-covered street, 23-year-old Luba lay passed out from drinking. A woman approached and helped her to stand and walk home.As the snow crunched under their feet, she told Luba only God could really help her. But Luba didn’t believe in anything at that time.
Luba’s parents died when she was a teenager. Her brother, who drank a lot, raised Luba with little supervision. By age 17, she had her own son to care for. This just solidified her place at the bottom of society.
The woman invited Luba to her home that cold winter day, and the next afternoon they met and watched Magdalena. This movie is one of our feature films here at Jesus Film Project® that follows the life of Christ and how He ministered to women. The movie is about a woman much like Luba—who society had turned away, and only Jesus was able to help.
Later, Luba prayed and accepted Christ. Some Christian women provided Luba and her young son with clothes and food.
Now, Luba looks to the future with optimism. “I know that with God I can survive any difficulties that may come and He will help me through His children, who surround me.”
Here in America, we too have women who need to watch the story of Magdalena. Those who have been abandoned, battered, raped, ignored, incarcerated—they all need hope, they need Jesus.
Sometimes sharing a story of one of the women Christ interacted with can lead to a meaningful spiritual conversation, opening a door to share the gospel.
